Ann Yom Steel

Managing Director & Counsellor

Ann is a counsellor, and former international-school Head of School with more than 25 years of experience spanning education, leadership and public service across Singapore, Washington D.C., Australia and the Philippines. Her background brings together disciplines not often found in one counselling practice — applied neuroscience, counselling, law and education — and a perspective shaped by years of working with young people, families and the systems around them.

Before founding The Interval, Ann led two international schools in Singapore, most recently an organisation bringing together education and multidisciplinary therapy services. Working closely with students, parents, educators and allied health professionals gave her a first-hand understanding of how closely emotional wellbeing, learning, relationships and family circumstances are connected. It also reinforced something she had seen throughout her career: a young person's difficulties rarely exist in isolation, and meaningful support often requires understanding the wider context of their lives.

Her counselling practice draws on postgraduate training in applied neuroscience and a particular interest in the neurological, psychological and social changes that continue through adolescence and emerging adulthood. She works with young people navigating anxiety, identity, relationships, educational pressures and significant career transitions, bringing a developmental perspective to each person's individual circumstances.

Ann founded The Interval from a conviction that the years between 14 and 25 deserve more thoughtful, specialised attention. Neither simply an extension of childhood nor a smaller version of adulthood, these are years when identity, independence, relationships and a sense of direction are taking shape. She envisioned a practice where young people feel understood on their own terms, supported by practitioners who genuinely understand this stage of life, and where parents and schools can be part of the conversation when helpful — without losing sight of the young person's own voice.
