FAQS
Getting Started
Whether you're seeking support for yourself, your young person or a student, we've answered some common questions to help you understand what to expect when working with The Interval.
-
Parent consultations offer practical guidance for parents and caregivers navigating their young person's emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships, developmental changes or school-related challenges.
Our practitioners bring extensive experience working with young people and their families in school settings, giving them a deep understanding of the educational, developmental and family contexts that shape a young person's experiences.
Sessions provide tailored psychoeducation, practical strategies and tools to help parents better understand and support their young person. This may include navigating school-related concerns, communicating with pastoral care teams or working collaboratively with educators to address specific needs.
Parent consultations are guidance-focused rather than therapy sessions for parents. Your young person does not need to attend or be receiving counselling at The Interval for you to book a consultation.
-
Counselling can be helpful when emotional, social, academic or personal challenges begin to affect everyday life, relationships or overall wellbeing. You don't need to be experiencing a crisis or have a specific diagnosis to benefit from support.
At The Interval, we work with adolescents and emerging adults aged 14–25, offering a confidential space to explore concerns, develop greater self-understanding and find constructive ways forward.
If you're unsure whether counselling is the right next step, you can submit an enquiry through our contact form. We'll help you consider your options, including which practitioner may be most appropriate for your needs or those of your young person.
-
Booking an appointment with The Interval is simple. You can book through our online booking system or directly from your preferred practitioner's profile. Choose a convenient time, review the brief booking terms and confirm your appointment with payment. If you're booking your first counselling session, we'll send you a confidential intake form to help us get to know you and prepare for our first conversation.
Appointments can be booked up to 60 days in advance. Availability beyond this period will be released on a rolling basis.
-
Yes. Parents are welcome to contact us to discuss concerns about their adolescent and explore appropriate support options.
While parents play an important role in supporting their child's wellbeing, counselling is most effective when the young person is willing to participate and feels comfortable engaging in the process.
Depending on the circumstances, we may recommend an initial parent consultation to better understand the situation and consider the most appropriate next steps.
-
At The Interval, individual counselling sessions are conducted privately between the young person and their practitioner, including the first session.
This is intentional. Providing young people with their own confidential space helps establish trust, encourages open and honest communication, and allows them to develop an independent therapeutic relationship with their counsellor or psychologist.
We recognise that parents play an important role in their child's wellbeing. For clients under 18, we therefore arrange a separate parent consultation before or around the time of the first counselling session to better understand the young person's developmental, family and educational context, as well as any concerns parents may wish to share.
Ongoing parental involvement will be guided by the young person's needs, consent and any relevant safeguarding considerations, with the aim of supporting both their growing independence and their relationships at home.
-
The first session is an opportunity for you and your counsellor to get to know one another, discuss what has brought you to counselling and explore what you hope to gain from the process.
There is no expectation to share everything immediately. Your counsellor will work at a pace that feels comfortable, explain how sessions are conducted and answer any questions you may have.
Together, you'll begin identifying areas to focus on and consider how counselling might best support your needs.
-
We recognise that parents and caregivers play an important role in supporting young people. At the same time, having a confidential space helps young people feel comfortable speaking openly.
For clients under 18, your practitioner will explain how parental involvement and communication will be managed. Parents may be updated on general progress and ways to support their child, typically after prior discussion with the young person, while the details of individual sessions will ordinarily remain confidential.
Where serious safety or safeguarding concerns arise, relevant information may need to be shared in accordance with professional and legal obligations.
-
There is no fixed number of sessions, as every individual's circumstances, needs and goals are different.
Some young people benefit from a relatively short period of focused support, while others may find longer-term counselling more helpful.
Your counsellor will review progress with you over time and discuss the frequency and duration of sessions as appropriate. Our aim is to provide meaningful support that responds to your needs, rather than follow a predetermined programme.

FAQS
Working with The Interval
Learn more about our approach, our practitioners and how we work collaboratively to support young people and their families.
-
The Interval is a specialist counselling and psychology practice dedicated to adolescents and emerging adults aged 14–25, alongside the parents and schools who support them.
Our practitioners combine professional counselling and psychological expertise with extensive experience in education, adolescent development and working with families. Our approach is informed by developmental neuroscience, evidence-based practice and ongoing professional training focused on the evolving needs of young people.
We recognise that young people's challenges rarely exist in isolation. By considering the relationships, family dynamics and educational environments that shape their experiences, we provide thoughtful, developmentally informed support that extends beyond the individual counselling session.
-
Finding a practitioner you feel comfortable with is an important part of the counselling process.
Our team brings different professional backgrounds, areas of expertise and approaches to working with young people and families. We encourage you to explore each practitioner's profile to learn more about their experience and approach.
If you're unsure who might be the right fit, you're welcome to make an enquiry. We'll be happy to help you explore your options.

At The Interval, our counsellors and psychologists are qualified professionals who bring different areas of expertise and experience to their work with young people and families.
Counsellors provide therapeutic support to help individuals navigate emotional, relational, behavioural and developmental challenges, drawing on evidence-informed counselling approaches.
Psychologists have specialised training in psychological theory, assessment and intervention, supporting individuals with a range of emotional, behavioural and psychological concerns within their areas of professional expertise.
Our Clinical Advisor works primarily with parents, offering guidance to help them better understand their young person's needs and navigate educational and support systems. This may include consultations with parents and meetings with school representatives, at the parents' request and with the young person's consent, to facilitate communication, coordinate support and identify appropriate pathways forward. The Clinical Advisor does not provide individual counselling sessions for young people.
Together, these complementary roles allow us to provide support that considers not only the young person, but also the wider relationships and environments that influence their wellbeing.
-
Confidentiality is fundamental to counselling at The Interval. What you share with your practitioner is treated with care and discretion, subject to professional and legal limits.
Information is not ordinarily shared with parents, schools or others without appropriate consent. Exceptions may apply where there are serious safety or safeguarding concerns, or where disclosure is required or permitted by law.
Your practitioner will explain confidentiality, its limits and any arrangements for parental involvement before counselling begins.

Yes. We recognise that supporting a young person's wellbeing may sometimes benefit from collaboration with the wider network of people involved in their lives.
Where appropriate, and with the young person's explicit consent, our practitioners may work alongside parents, educators or other professionals to promote a more coordinated approach to support.
We also partner directly with schools to provide counselling services and consultation that complement their existing student wellbeing structures. Contact us at hello@theintervalsg.com so that we can learn more about your school’s support needs.
Important: The Interval is not an emergency or crisis response service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 995 for an emergency ambulance or 999 for Police assistance.
