Yi Ling Ong

Counsellor

Yi Ling is a person-centred counsellor, career counsellor and former educator who believes that seeking help can be one of the bravest things we do when life feels difficult or uncertain.

With over 14 years of experience across Singapore's education landscape, from primary school to university, Yi Ling has supported people at different stages of life through learning, wellbeing and career development. Her journey into career counselling, where she helped individuals navigate career decisions and transitions, eventually led her towards counselling. She was drawn to the meaning she found in one-to-one conversations about people's hopes, fears, relationships and sense of self. Her counselling experience also includes working with individuals, families and groups alongside other helping professionals.

What she finds most rewarding about counselling is witnessing those moments when a client begins to see themselves differently — when something clicks, a previously hidden strength comes into view, or they simply show up even when it's difficult. She believes that meaningful change often begins with developing a more honest and compassionate relationship with ourselves.

Perhaps this belief is also rooted in her own experience of growing up as an introverted, bookish young person who felt more comfortable chatting with different schoolmates than being part of a clique. Beyond rigorous academics, she most cherished the co-curricular communities where she flourished as a whole person. These experiences continue to shape her belief in the power of strong relationships to sustain wellbeing.

At The Interval, Yi Ling hopes to create a space where clients can slow down, feel heard without judgement and become more curious about themselves. She works collaboratively with clients navigating difficult feelings, relationships, identity, educational pressures, transitions and questions about study or career direction.

Above all, she hopes to help young people recognise the strengths and resources they already possess, listen to themselves more deeply and grow as whole human beings.
